Maya: Bella Ramsey to Co-Lead New Thriller Series
After her zombie-slaying adventures in “The Last of Us,” Bella Ramsey is making a return to television. The British actress is set to co-lead the cast of the upcoming thriller series “Maya,” written and created by BAFTA and International Emmy nominee Daisy Haggard.
In this six-part series, Ramsey will portray Maya, the teenage daughter of Anna (played by Haggard). The story follows the duo as they enter a witness protection program to escape a life-threatening danger, leading them to adopt new identities and move to a small rural town in Scotland. However, their past trauma catches up with them in the form of two relentless hitmen determined to track them down.
Ramsey expressed her excitement for the project, praising the vivid characters and witty dialogue created by Haggard. She looks forward to portraying Maya opposite Haggard’s Anna in this gripping thriller.
Described as darkly comedic with Haggard’s trademark warmth and humor, “Maya” delves into themes of predatory behavior, family dynamics, and love. Above all, it celebrates the unbreakable bond between mother and daughter. The series will be filmed entirely in Scotland later this year, with additional casting announcements forthcoming.
Haggard, who also serves as the director alongside Jamie Donoughue, expressed her admiration for Ramsey’s talent and is thrilled to collaborate with her on this project. She is eager to bring this story to life on screen and explore the unique relationship between Maya and Anna.
“Maya” was commissioned by Channel 4 and is a production of Two Brothers Pictures in association with All3Media International. Haggard serves as the executive producer, along with Harry and Jack Williams, Sarah Hammond, Alex Mercer, and Daisy Mount. The series promises to resonate deeply with viewers through the compelling performances of Ramsey and Haggard.
