Democratic Congressman Al Green believes that peaceful protests still hold significance, especially when it involves President Donald Trump and his divisive language and behavior.

Green, a representative from Texas, gained attention when he displayed a “Black People Aren’t Apes!” sign at the State of the Union address. He explained to TMZ the importance of addressing issues in person.

Green believed that Trump was aware of the backlash from his racist posts depicting Barack and Michelle Obama as apes. However, Green felt that Trump needed to be directly confronted, as it carries more weight than online criticism.

As Trump passed by, Green, strategically positioned near the aisle, informed Trump that “Black people aren’t apes.”

Trump immediately tried to distance himself from the confrontation. Green then proceeded to display the sign reading “Black People Aren’t Apes!” which led to his removal from the chamber.

Green does not believe there should be consequences for his protest, citing that MAGA members often wear hats with slogans. He questions the double standard in such situations.

This marks the second consecutive year that Green was ejected from a speech by Trump. Last year, Green protested when Trump referred to his 2024 victory as a “mandate,” shouting, “You have no mandate to cut Medicaid,” resulting in his removal from the chamber by the Speaker of the House.
