In a landscape where legislative gridlock is becoming an art form, Speaker Mike Johnson finds himself grappling with a self-imposed conundrum, thanks to a lack of initiative from his Republican colleagues in the House.

The Senate has forged ahead, passing four of five vital government funding bills while leaving the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in limbo, relegated to a mere two-week continuing resolution (CR). This decision has not only complicated Johnson’s agenda but also intensified the pressure on his already beleaguered leadership.

As the Senate altered the funding process after the House had already passed its DHS allocations, the two-week CR must now make its way back to the House for approval. The challenge is amplified by the fact that votes in the House have transformed into perilous political minefields for Republican leaders, leaving Johnson in a precarious position as he attempts to navigate this legislative labyrinth without giving his own party members the chance to sabotage their efforts.

Currently, House Republicans are convening on a call to strategize their next steps.

According to Jake Sherman of Punchbowl News,

“HOUSE REPUBLICANS are on a call right now. All of the leaders emphasized that members need to come to Washington due to the tightening margins. Five of the six spending bills are slated to return to the House unchanged, as anticipated given the bipartisan nature of the agreements. JOHNSON expressed his hope to have the five bills along with the DHS CR passed by Monday.”

However, here’s the catch: Johnson lacks the necessary votes to secure passage independently.
