Denver’s unionized Starbucks employees went on strike to protest the company’s refusal to negotiate over pay and address unfair labor practices. The strike organized by Starbucks Workers United began in Chicago, Seattle, and Los Angeles on Friday and spread to Denver, Columbus, and Pittsburgh on Saturday.
Barista Shay Mannik joined his coworkers on the picket line outside the University Hills store, expressing the group’s determination to fight for fair wages. Mannik shared that many employees struggle to make ends meet despite working at Starbucks.
Starbucks Workers United criticized the company’s recent proposal during contract negotiations, claiming it offered minimal wage increases that do not adequately address employee concerns. The union warned that the strike will expand until Starbucks meets their demands.
While Starbucks did not directly address the union’s grievances, they stated that the strike has had minimal impact on store operations. However, the union remains steadfast in their efforts to secure better wages and working conditions for all Starbucks employees.
As the busy holiday season approaches, union baristas are standing firm in their fight for fair treatment and recognition of their value as essential members of the Starbucks team.
