A new iteration of the popular ABC series “Desperate Housewives” is currently in development at Onyx Collective, as confirmed by Variety. The upcoming project is titled “Wisteria Lane” and is set to be written and executive produced by Natalie Chaidez, with Kerry Washington and Pilar Savone serving as executive producers through Simpson Street. Stacey Sher of Shiny Penny is also on board as an executive producer, with 20th Television as the studio behind the production. Simpson Street is currently under an overall deal at 20th TV.
According to the official logline, “Wisteria Lane” will revolve around a group of five very different friends and occasional frenemies who all reside on a picturesque cul-de-sac named ‘Wisteria Lane.’ While everything seems perfect on the surface with beautiful homes, gorgeous families, and shiny SUVs in the driveway, there are hidden secrets behind the white picket fences and smiling social media posts.
The original “Desperate Housewives” series, created by Marc Cherry, aired on ABC from 2004 to 2012, spanning eight seasons and nearly 200 episodes. The show was an instant hit and featured a talented cast including Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross, and Eva Longoria. Throughout its run, the series received 38 Emmy nominations, with Huffman winning Best Lead Actress in a Comedy in 2005 and Kathryn Joosten winning Best Guest Actress in a Comedy twice. Originally produced by ABC Studios, the series is now under the umbrella of 20th Television.
The development of “Wisteria Lane” further solidifies Simpson Street’s collaboration with Onyx Collective, as the content brand currently airs the successful legal drama “Reasonable Doubt,” produced by Simpson Street and heading into its third season. Simpson Street also previously produced the Onyx comedy “UnPrisoned,” in which Kerry Washington starred alongside Delroy Lindo.
Natalie Chaidez, the writer and executive producer of “Wisteria Lane,” has an impressive track record, having served as co-showrunner on the critically acclaimed Max series “The Flight Attendant” for its second season. She has also worked on shows like “Queen of the South,” “Heroes,” “12 Monkeys,” “In Plain Sight,” and “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.” Chaidez is represented by CAA and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
The exciting development news was first reported by Deadline, and fans of the original “Desperate Housewives” series can look forward to a fresh take on the beloved show with “Wisteria Lane.” Stay tuned for more updates on this highly anticipated project.
