Brendan Carr, the chair of the FCC appointed by former President Trump, has called on TV broadcasters to come together in honor of the United States’ 250th anniversary this year. He suggested that local stations could kick off each broadcast day with the “Star Spangled Banner” or the Pledge of Allegiance as a way to celebrate the occasion.

Carr introduced the Pledge America Campaign, aligning it with the White House’s Salute to America 250 Task Force agenda. The campaign aims to reignite a love for American history, showcase the beauty of the country, and inspire a sense of adventure and innovation that will propel the nation forward over the next 250 years.

The FCC stated that Carr is responding to the White House’s call with the Pledge America Campaign, allowing broadcasters to show support for Task Force 250 and commemorate America’s 250th birthday by broadcasting patriotic and pro-American content. This content will highlight the nation’s historic achievements from its founding to the present administration.

In addition to promoting patriotic programming, Carr expressed his desire to assist local TV stations in reducing the amount of reverse compensation they pay for programming to national networks. He emphasized the importance of civic education, national pride, and shared history in today’s society.

Carr emphasized the need for programming that celebrates American Independence and addresses the decline of civics education. He urged broadcasters to provide content tailored to their local communities to fulfill their public interest obligations.

As part of the campaign, Carr suggested various examples of “nonpartisan” celebratory programming, including running PSAs and specials promoting civic education, featuring local historical sites in news segments, playing music by American composers, and highlighting significant events in American history each day. He also recommended partnering with community organizations to showcase stories of unity, perseverance, and triumph in American history.

By participating in the Pledge America Campaign, broadcasters have the opportunity to contribute to the national celebration of America’s 250th anniversary and promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of the country’s rich history.
