The Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting, also known as Warren Buffett’s “Woodstock for Capitalists,” has long been a must-attend event for investors from around the world. However, this year’s meeting has a new challenge for international attendees due to the current political climate.

Xin Jin, a Chinese investor from Guangzhou, had planned to make his second visit to Omaha this May. In 2012, he invested half of his assets in Berkshire’s stock, which turned out to be one of his most profitable investments. Despite his admiration for Buffett, Jin was hesitant to travel internationally this year due to the political tensions.

Similarly, a consumer-focused Chinese investor from Shanghai, who has attended the annual meeting three times, opted to skip this year’s event due to concerns about the hostile political environment. Another Chinese shareholder noted a decrease in third-party agencies organizing trips to Omaha, indicating a lower turnout of international attendees.

The current global trade war initiated by President Donald Trump has heightened political tensions between the U.S. and other countries, particularly China. The Chinese government issued a risk alert for Chinese tourists traveling to the U.S. citing deteriorating economic and trade relations and domestic security concerns.

Despite these challenges, Berkshire’s annual meeting remains a significant event, attracting up to 40,000 attendees to Omaha. The gathering provides a unique opportunity to hear from Warren Buffett, Greg Abel, and Ajit Jain during the Q&A session, which will be broadcast on CNBC and webcast in English and Mandarin.

Buffett, acknowledging the growing international representation at the meeting, used to hold special receptions for foreign attendees. However, as the number of international visitors increased, he discontinued the event. In a 2009 annual letter, Buffett mentioned that the number of international visitors had reached 800, leading to the decision to end the receptions.

The Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting continues to be a highly anticipated event for investors worldwide, despite the challenges posed by the current political climate. Buffett’s insights and wisdom attract a diverse range of attendees, showcasing the global appeal of his investment philosophy.
