A former Army Colonel from Florida has been sentenced to two years in prison for attempting to impress a woman he met online by sharing classified battle plans. Kevin Charles Luke, a retired combat veteran, was working as a civilian contractor with “top secret” clearance at US military headquarters in Tampa when he sent a photo of plans for a Middle East attack to his romantic interest.

The image he shared contained details about the date of the operation, the number of targets, and battle plans, all labeled as “SECRET//REL TO USA, FVEY,” indicating it was only meant for authorized personnel in the intelligence alliance known as the “Five Eyes.”

After breaking up with the woman, she reported Luke to authorities, leading to a search of his home. Luke later pleaded guilty to unauthorized communication of classified military strike plans but claimed he only sent the text to impress the woman, not for treason or financial gain.

The specific attack referenced in the email remains unclear, but it was sent shortly before Central Command launched airstrikes in Yemen against the Houthis. US District Judge James Moody expressed deep concern over Luke’s actions, stating that his betrayal of the nation’s secrets put service members at risk.

During his sentencing, Luke tearfully accepted full responsibility for his actions, expressing shame and regret. While prosecutors had requested a four-year sentence, Judge Moody ultimately decided on a two-year prison term, considering Luke’s military service in his decision.
