Francis Ford Coppola, the legendary film director, recently found himself in a hospital in Italy, triggering rumors of a potential cardiac episode. The 86-year-old Coppola, known for his iconic works such as “The Godfather” and “Apocalypse Now,” was in Rome to present his latest project, the $120 million epic “Megalopolis,” at the Magna Grecia Film Festival in Calabria.

Reports indicated that Coppola’s hospitalization was due to a routine procedure to update treatment for atrial fibrillation, a condition he has been managing. However, sources close to him revealed that the experience of being rushed to the hospital brought back memories of his childhood battle with polio, causing him “sheer terror.”

Polio, a highly infectious disease that can lead to paralysis, struck Coppola when he was just nine years old. The director recalled the night he fell ill, describing a crowded hospital ward filled with gurneys and crying children in iron lungs. These memories resurfaced during his recent hospital visit, reminding him of the fear and uncertainty he experienced as a child.

Despite the challenges he faced with polio, Coppola credited his father, composer Carmine Coppola, for finding alternative treatments that helped him recover. He also expressed admiration for the doctors who developed the Salk and Sabin vaccines, which played a crucial role in eradicating polio in the late 1950s.

Coppola’s experience with polio has left a lasting impact on him, shaping his views on the importance of vaccination. He remains concerned about the rise in anti-vaccine sentiment worldwide, especially in light of the Covid-19 pandemic. He emphasized the absurdity of reversing course on vaccines, given the progress made in eliminating diseases like polio.

As Coppola continues his recovery and reflects on his past, he remains focused on his creative endeavors. Despite the mixed reception and modest box office earnings of “Megalopolis,” he remains optimistic about the future. Addressing a crowd at the film festival, Coppola urged for unity and collaboration in building a better world.

Throughout the summer, Coppola has been exploring new film locations in Italy and spending time in Bernalda, where his grandfather was born. He has embraced the town as his own, becoming an honorary citizen in 1989. Coppola’s resilience and passion for storytelling continue to inspire audiences around the world, reminding us of the power of perseverance and creativity in the face of adversity.
