The 2023 Acting Nods: Celebrating Diversity and Representation

The recent announcement of the acting nominations for the 2023 Globes brought a mix of triumphs and disappointments in terms of diversity and representation in the industry.

Latino actors saw a significant presence this year, with Afro-Latinos making a particularly strong showing. Colman Domingo’s powerful performance in “Sing Sing” earned him a well-deserved nomination, while Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez received recognition for their roles in “Emilia PĂ©rez” and “Only Murders in the Building,” respectively. Fernanda Torres, following in her mother Fernanda Montenegro’s footsteps, was nominated for “I’m Still Here.” Notable mentions also went to Liza ColĂłn-Zayas, SofĂa Vergara, and Diego Luna for their outstanding work on television. Fede Álvarez’s “Alien: Romulus” also received praise for its box office success and cinematic achievement. However, the absence of Nicholas Alexander Chavez in “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” was a notable snub.

Black actors were highlighted in the film category, with Denzel Washington, Zendaya, and Cynthia Erivo among the nominees. However, some notable omissions included Danielle Deadwyler, Clarence Maclin, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, and RaMell Ross. On the TV side, Jamie Foxx, Quinta Brunson, Ayo Edebiri, and Donald Glover received well-deserved nominations.

AAPI talent shone on television, with Ali Wong, Ramy Youssef, Tadanobu Asano, Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, and Maya Erskine all receiving nominations. Indigenous performer Kali Reis also garnered attention for her role in “True Detective: Night Country.”

Karla SofĂa GascĂłn made history for the LGBTQ community with her nomination for “Emilia PĂ©rez,” becoming the first openly trans performer to be nominated in a top film acting category. Non-binary actor Emma D’Arcy was also recognized for her role in “House of the Dragon,” alongside other openly gay actors like Jodie Foster and Richard Gadd. The nominations this year reflect a step towards greater inclusivity and representation in the entertainment industry.
