Kantamanto Market: A Year of Recovery and Resilience

It has been almost a year since the devastating fire at Kantamanto Market shook the community to its core. The aftermath left many feeling overlooked and abandoned, as they struggled to pick up the pieces and rebuild their lives.

Yayra Agbofah, founder of The Revival, a non-profit organization operating in the area, spearheaded efforts to provide support and assistance to those affected by the fire. Through a combination of public donations, grants from foundations such as Bestseller Foundation and Zalando, and his own resources, Agbofah was able to raise funds to help the community recover.

Despite the lack of support from some brands, the resilience and determination of the people of Kantamanto prevailed. Within three months of the fire, the market was open for business once again, thanks to the efforts of organizations like the Or Foundation and The Revival.

The Or Foundation played a crucial role in the recovery process, spending thousands of dollars on clearing debris, providing medical support, and distributing relief aid to community members. Over 9,000 people were registered for direct relief funds, and funds were transferred to the Kantamanto Upcyclers Association and individual community members in need.

Similarly, The Revival focused on supporting the people first, providing safety equipment, food, water, temporary accommodation, and direct cash assistance to those most affected by the fire. They also invested in infrastructure restoration, new machinery, and micro-grants for traders to help rebuild their businesses.

As we reflect on the past year, it is clear that the recovery efforts in Kantamanto have been remarkable. The community has shown incredible resilience and strength in the face of adversity, coming together to rebuild and restore what was lost.

While the scars of the fire may still be visible, the spirit of unity and determination in Kantamanto serves as a beacon of hope for the future. As the market continues to thrive and grow, it is a testament to the power of community and the ability to overcome challenges together.
