Since becoming King in 2022, he has not attended the renowned race. This year, however, he plans to return, sparking discussions within royal circles as it aligns with the wedding of his nephew, Peter Phillips, 48, to Harriet Sperling, 46, at Princess Anne’s Gatcombe Park estate.
Insiders suggest that the timing of this decision allows Charles to sidestep potentially awkward interactions with the daughters of the disgraced ex-Prince Andrew, Beatrice, 37, and Eugenie, 36, during the wedding reception.
A royal source stated, “There is notable surprise within the palace at the King’s newfound enthusiasm for the Derby. Although the event holds significance due to his mother’s fondness for it, some observe that it also offers a graceful exit strategy from extended wedding festivities.”
The source further explained, “If Charles stays at Peter’s for the reception, he might find himself in prolonged discussions with the York family. By having another important commitment, he has a valid reason to leave early without causing any offense.”
