Liam Hemsworth Opens Up About Stepping Into Geralt’s Shoes for ‘The Witcher’

Liam Hemsworth recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly, revealing that he abstained from social media for the majority of last year following the announcement that he would be taking over the role of Geralt in The Witcher from beloved actor Henry Cavill, who had led the fantasy series for its first three seasons. Hemsworth is set to portray the iconic character in the final two seasons, with Season 4 premiering this October.

Reflecting on the fan reaction to his casting, Hemsworth stated, “There was quite a bit of noise, and I had to put that aside. It started to become a distraction. I’ve dealt with that sort of thing in the past a lot, and at the end of the day, I love making movies and I love telling stories and acting. I just don’t want that to affect my way of telling the story.” He emphasized his desire to focus solely on his craft, explaining, “I jumped off social media and the internet most of last year.”

Fans were understandably upset when news broke that Cavill would not be continuing with the series. In an effort to quell any backlash, Cavill offered his support to Hemsworth, stating, “In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men.”

Series creator and showrunner, Lauren Hissrich, revealed to EW that discussions surrounding Cavill’s exit had been ongoing for some time prior to Hemsworth’s official recasting. Hissrich explained, “He had plans for other roles that he really wanted to commit himself to. And for us, you don’t want to hold someone and force them to be doing something that they don’t want to do. I think that’s why it felt like a really symbiotic decision.”

Anya Chalotra, who portrays Yennefer in the series, admitted to being emotionally impacted by the news of Cavill’s departure, stating, “I cried when I found out. It really impacted me. We were so bonded to these people, and to lose such an important member of the team…it hurt.” Chalotra articulated her dedication to her character, saying, “I’ve put everything into this character. This show means the world to me.”

However, Hissrich assured fans that Cavill’s exit would not spell the end for The Witcher. “We never really had serious conversations about the show not continuing,” she explained. “The show is bigger than one actor. There’s a book series, there’s a video game. We are the third entry into this. So The Witcher lives whether or not we go.”

The Witcher Season 3, released in two parts on Netflix in June and July of 2023, marked Cavill’s final appearance as Geralt. Hemsworth’s debut as the character will take place when Season 4 streams on October 30.
