Christian Ruiz Berman, a Mexican artist now residing in upstate New York, is deeply rooted in the magical realist tradition. His paintings serve as a reflection of his experiences with immigration and adaptation to new environments, blending elements of Mexican muralist traditions, Latin American folk art, Taoism, Buddhism, poetry, and Japanese printmaking.

Ruiz Berman’s compositions are intricate and surreal, bringing together diverse symbols and textures in a way that highlights the relationships between them. His work reflects a fusion of Eastern and Latin American cultures, capturing both intentionality and playfulness.

Animals play a significant role in Ruiz Berman’s paintings, often symbolizing stewards of human culture. Jaguars and birds, typically seen as protectors and messengers in Mesoamerican mythology, are reimagined in his work to challenge traditional narratives and expand their symbolic meanings.

Currently, Ruiz Berman’s work can be viewed at the Mindy Solomon Gallery in Miami, with upcoming exhibitions at Art Basel Hong Kong alongside Proyectos Monclova and Harper’s Gallery in New York. To explore more of his art, visit his website and Instagram profile.
