A dramatic scene unfolded in the West Loop on Wednesday morning as a man allegedly barricaded himself inside a Coca-Cola truck, leading to a SWAT team response. The incident began when the Coke delivery driver returned to his truck after a delivery on West Madison and discovered a man among the soda cases in the back of the rig.

The driver confronted the man, asking if he was attempting to steal from the truck. In response, the man inside the truck began kicking the trailer bed, damaging the door lock and ledge and effectively barricading himself inside. Despite attempts by the police and a CPD supervisor to coax the man out, he refused to comply, prompting the supervisor to call in a SWAT team for assistance.

After gaining partial access to the truck, a SWAT officer was able to enter and take the man, identified as 46-year-old Travis Prewitt, into custody. Prewitt was then taken to the University of Illinois Hospital for shortness of breath and other health issues.

However, the ordeal did not end there. As officers were leading Prewitt back to a squad car to transport him to the station, he managed to break away from an officer and run two blocks while handcuffed before being apprehended again by the police. Prewitt now faces a slew of charges, including felony counts of burglary, escape from a peace officer, and criminal damage, as well as misdemeanor counts of criminal damage, trespassing to a vehicle, and resisting arrest.

During a court hearing on Friday, Judge Mary Marubio granted the state’s detention petition for Prewitt. This bizarre and chaotic incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of law enforcement work and the challenges that police officers face in maintaining public safety.
