A carjacking incident that took place earlier this year in Old Town has resulted in charges being filed against a West Side man. Tyron Rivera, 32, has been accused of vehicular hijacking after allegedly stealing a woman’s car near a busy intersection in the early hours of the morning on April 26. The victim’s car was found on fire just minutes after the incident occurred.
According to prosecutors, Rivera approached a 36-year-old woman who was sitting in her car on North LaSalle Street. He allegedly pointed an object at her that she believed to be a firearm, but turned out to be a phone. Rivera then forcibly removed the woman from her car and drove off in her white 2025 Honda SUV.
The entire hijacking was captured on video, which aided police in identifying Rivera. Investigators also discovered evidence suggesting that Rivera had been in communication with an unidentified accomplice before, during, and after the crime. Approximately ten minutes after the carjacking, emergency callers reported a vehicle on fire on North Vine Street, where the woman’s SUV was found ablaze.
The victim was able to positively identify Rivera from a photo lineup as the perpetrator of the carjacking. Chicago Police officers were able to locate and apprehend Rivera to face charges in connection with the incident.
