The Republican majority in the House of Representatives is precariously close to the edge, a situation exacerbated by a recent special election victory for Democrats in Texas. With a razor-thin margin, House Republicans find themselves in a position where they can’t afford any missteps.

As the midterm elections loom, it’s unlikely that any Speaker of the House would publicly acknowledge a potential loss of their majority. Yet, Speaker Mike Johnson continues to project optimism about the upcoming elections, despite indicators suggesting a looming Democratic surge.

While the American populace grapples with pressing issues like healthcare costs, inflation, and overall affordability, Johnson’s discourse has conspicuously avoided these critical topics.

Instead, Johnson found himself entangled in discussions about former President Trump’s unfounded claims regarding the 2020 election and the FBI’s operations in Fulton County, Georgia. During an interview on Meet The Press, host Kristen Welker posed a pointed question: “Is it healthy for this country’s democracy for the sitting president to continue questioning the legitimacy of the 2020 election, especially when those claims have been repeatedly debunked?”

In his response, Johnson emphasized the importance of “election integrity,” stating, “What’s healthy for our country and our democracy is for everyone to be laser-focused on election integrity. You don’t have free and fair elections—”

Welker interjected to clarify, “But that’s not election integrity, Mr. Speaker.”

Despite her challenge, Johnson persisted in framing the discussion around Trump’s narrative. Welker countered, “This issue has been litigated and resolved; the page has been turned. Yet, he’s still fixated on an election he lost, with allegations that have been deemed false.”

As Johnson struggled to defend Trump’s position, one couldn’t help but notice the dissonance between the pressing concerns of Americans and the topics dominating the political discourse.
