Ncuti Gatwa bids farewell to the Tardis in the latest episode of “Doctor Who” Series 14. In a dramatic climax, Gatwa’s Doctor regenerates into Billie Piper, who is known for her portrayal of companion Rose Tyler in previous seasons of the show.

The finale of the episode, as reported by BBC, features a credit that reads, “Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor. Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor. And introducing Billie Piper.” While it may seem like Piper is set to take on the role of the Doctor, it is not officially confirmed. In a statement to the BBC, Piper teased fans by saying they will have to wait to find out the true significance of her return to the Whoniverse.

Piper expressed her love for the show and her excitement at stepping back into the Tardis once more. She mentioned that returning to “Doctor Who” brought back some of her best memories and that she couldn’t pass up the opportunity. However, the details of her character and storyline are being kept under wraps for now.

Speculation about Gatwa’s departure has been circulating since before the start of Season 2, especially with a decline in ratings. Gatwa, who made history as the first openly queer Black actor to play the Doctor, led the series alongside companions Millie Gibson and Varada Sethu under showrunner Russell T Davies. His exit marks a significant moment for the show and leaves the future of “Doctor Who” uncertain.

As for the show’s future, “Doctor Who” was initially slated for a two-season run on Disney+ and the BBC, but its renewal status remains unclear. Gatwa remained tight-lipped about a potential third season, focusing on the success of Season 2 and his other projects. He has been balancing his time on the show with stage roles and upcoming film projects, showcasing his versatility as an actor.

Stay tuned for more updates on the iconic British sci-fi series.
