Netflix Japan’s “Bullet Train Explosion” Marks a Milestone in Japanese Cinema

Netflix Japan is set to make a bold statement with its upcoming release of “Bullet Train Explosion,” a modern reboot of the 1975 classic film “Bullet Train.” The highly anticipated movie is scheduled to premiere on April 23, coinciding with Netflix’s 10th anniversary in the Japanese market.

Director of live action content for Netflix Japan, Shinichi Takahashi, shared that the production of “Bullet Train Explosion” had unprecedented access to Japan’s iconic bullet trains. The team rented an entire bullet train and filmed it in motion multiple times, covering the route from Tokyo to Aomori. This level of cooperation from JR East Railways was a stark contrast to the original film’s production, which faced obstacles due to security concerns. Extensive pre-production discussions were crucial in securing this historic collaboration.

The production scale of the film included the construction of two full-sized bullet train cars using authentic materials, as well as the creation of a 1/6 scale model train for explosive sequences. Director Shinji Higuchi, renowned for his work on “Shin Godzilla,” helmed the project, with Tsuyoshi Kusanagi leading the cast in a gripping narrative of a hijacked bullet train rigged with bombs set to detonate if its speed drops below 100 kph. Higuchi expressed gratitude for Netflix’s support in bringing his vision to life.

“Bullet Train Explosion” is part of Netflix Japan’s strategy to invest in unique local content that can resonate with global audiences. The platform aims to showcase distinctive stories that may be considered too niche by traditional studios. Other notable projects in Netflix Japan’s film slate include the successful manga adaptation “Demon City” and the upcoming film “10Dance.”

For Takahashi, these productions represent a realization of his belief in the global potential of Japanese titles and creators. He pointed to the international recognition received by “City Hunter” star Ryohei Suzuki as evidence of Japanese talent resonating with audiences worldwide. With “Bullet Train Explosion,” Netflix Japan continues to push boundaries and showcase the creativity and innovation of Japanese cinema on a global stage.
