OpenAI Disbands Mission Alignment Team, Names Chief Futurist

OpenAI has made significant changes within its organizational structure by disbanding a team that was previously responsible for communicating the company’s mission to both the public and employees. This decision has led to the team members being reassigned to different roles within the company. The news of this restructuring was first reported by Platformer and later confirmed by OpenAI to JS.

The team in question, which was formed in September 2024, was dedicated to promoting OpenAI’s mission of ensuring that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. An official spokesperson described the team as a support function aimed at helping employees and the public understand the company’s mission and the impact of AI. Despite the team’s dissolution, the work of promoting OpenAI’s mission continues throughout the organization.

In a recent blog post, Josh Achiam, the former leader of the disbanded mission alignment team, announced his new role as OpenAI’s chief futurist. In this capacity, Achiam will be focusing on studying how the world will change in response to AI, AGI, and beyond, with the goal of supporting OpenAI’s mission to benefit humanity through artificial general intelligence.

As part of his new role, Achiam will be collaborating with Jason Pruet, a physicist at OpenAI. While Achiam’s new responsibilities have been clearly defined, it remains unclear whether he will have a new team working under him in his futurist role.

Following the disbanding of the mission alignment team, the remaining members, totaling six or seven individuals, have been reassigned to different parts of the company. The spokesperson for OpenAI mentioned that these team members are engaged in similar work in their new roles, although the specifics of their assignments were not disclosed.

This restructuring within OpenAI is part of routine reorganizations that occur in fast-moving companies. Previously, OpenAI had a “superalignment team” focused on studying long-term existential threats posed by AI, which was formed in 2023 but disbanded in 2024.

Despite these changes, Josh Achiam’s personal website still identifies him as the head of mission alignment at OpenAI, reflecting his continued commitment to ensuring a positive long-term future for humanity. His LinkedIn profile also indicates his tenure as head of mission alignment since September 2024.

Correction: This story originally confused mission alignment with another team called alignment. The error has been rectified, and we apologize for any confusion caused.
