Judy Pace, Trailblazing Actress and Model, Passes Away at 83

Judy Pace, a trailblazing actress and model known for her groundbreaking work in television and film, has passed away at the age of 83. Pace, who rose to fame in the 1960s and 1970s, leaves behind a legacy of pioneering achievements in the entertainment industry.

On March 11, Pace peacefully passed away in her sleep while visiting family in Marina del Rey, according to a statement released by her family. Her impact on the industry was immense, and she will be deeply missed by her loved ones and fans alike.

One of Pace’s most notable accomplishments was becoming the first Black female actress to be signed to a long-term contract by Columbia Pictures in the early 1960s. Her career began as a model, and she quickly transitioned into acting, making her film debut in William Castle’s “13 Frightened Girls.” Pace’s breakout role came when she joined the cast of the popular primetime soap opera “Peyton Place” in 1968 and 1969, solidifying her status as one of the most prominent Black actors on television at the time.

In 1971, Pace further cemented her place in Hollywood with a supporting role in the critically acclaimed ABC TV movie “Brian’s Song.” Her portrayal of Linda Sayers, the wife of NFL player Gale Sayers, earned her widespread acclaim and showcased her talent as a versatile actress. Pace also starred in the short-lived but impactful ABC drama series “The Young Lawyers,” where she played a law student providing pro bono assistance to those in need.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Pace’s career spanned both television and film, with credits including “The Fortune Cookie,” “Cotton Comes to Harlem,” and “Cool Breeze.” She also made guest appearances on popular TV shows such as “Bewitched,” “Sanford and Son,” and “Good Times,” showcasing her range as an actress.

Outside of her acting career, Pace was a dedicated philanthropist. In 1971, she co-founded the Kwanza Foundation with Nichelle Nichols, focusing on supporting Black women in film and providing scholarships to minority students pursuing careers in the arts.

Throughout her life, Pace was married to actor Don Mitchell and later to baseball legend Curt Flood. She is survived by her two daughters, Shawn Pace Mitchell and Julia Pace Mitchell, as well as a grandson.

Judy Pace’s contributions to the entertainment industry will forever be remembered, and her legacy as a trailblazing actress and model will continue to inspire future generations.
