Prime Video Explores the Concept of Divorce Insurance in New Korean Rom-Com Series
Prime Video has delved into uncharted territory with its latest Korean rom-com series titled “The Divorce Insurance,” introducing the unique concept of insuring against marital dissolution. The show poses a thought-provoking question: “Is there an insurance policy that can guarantee your happiness for a lifetime?”
The storyline revolves around an insurance company’s product development team as they work on creating a divorce insurance product to tackle one of the most pressing concerns in modern society. Set in an office setting, the series focuses on the dedicated actuary Ki-jun and his team’s journey to bring this innovative product to life.
Featuring a stellar Korean cast, the series stars Lee Dong-wook (“Harbin”) as No Ki-jun, an insurance actuary who has gone through three marriages and divorces. Drawing inspiration from his personal experiences, Ki-jun spearheads the development of the divorce insurance product to assist individuals in similar situations.
Lee Joo-been (“Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area”) takes on the role of Kang Han-deul, an insurance underwriter with a quirky personality who undergoes a transformation following her own divorce. Joining Ki-jun’s team, she embarks on a journey of self-discovery while navigating a budding relationship with him.
The ensemble cast also includes Lee Kwang-soo (“Karma”) as risk surveyor An Jeon-man, who hides his timid nature behind a cool facade, and Lee Da-hee (“Island”) as Jeon Na-rae, a financial mathematician whose outlook on life evolves from a purely financial perspective to a more holistic one.
In an interview with Variety, Lee Dong-wook addresses the potentially controversial premise of the series. He emphasizes that the show’s message is not about glorifying or condemning divorce but rather about showcasing it as a natural part of life. He stresses that life goes on even after divorce and that it does not define a person’s worth.
Reactions to the show’s premise have been largely positive, according to Lee Joo-been. She notes that most people have expressed curiosity and even interest in the idea of divorce insurance, indicating a willingness to explore unconventional solutions to common issues.
Lee Da-hee, whose character deals with the financial aspects of divorce, hopes that the series will challenge negative stereotypes surrounding divorce. She aims to convey the message that divorce can be a catalyst for personal growth and a new beginning rather than a source of shame or failure.
Comedic actor Lee Kwang-soo infuses the series with his humor through improvisation, adding a lighthearted touch to the potentially heavy subject matter. He appreciates the show’s positive and optimistic approach towards marriage and divorce, emphasizing the importance of making choices that lead to happiness.
“The Divorce Insurance” is now available for streaming on Prime Video, offering viewers a fresh perspective on relationships, personal growth, and the complexities of modern love.
