Stocks took a hit as the US moved forward with tariffs on automakers, sparking concerns about an escalating trade war. This overshadowed the positive news of faster-than-expected growth in the US economy. Major car manufacturers like Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, and General Motors felt the impact, while AppLovin Corp. faced a decline following a critical report from Muddy Waters. Tech giants like Apple saw gains, while Nvidia struggled. Lululemon Athletica Inc. also painted a bleak picture with a gloomy outlook.

President Donald Trump’s proclamation of a 25% tariff on auto imports, along with threats of harsher punishment on the EU and Canada, added to the uncertainty in the market. Despite the revised data showing a quicker expansion in the economy, investors remain focused on the current economic landscape rather than past figures.

Bret Kenwell from eToro noted that the recent data may not instill confidence in investors, who are more concerned with the ongoing trade tensions. The bond market reflected worries about inflation as short-term Treasuries outperformed longer ones.

Looking ahead, the upcoming inflation data will provide insight into price pressures and economic activity leading up to Trump’s planned announcement on reciprocal tariffs. The Federal Reserve’s concerns about inflation persist, with Friday’s personal consumption expenditures price index expected to show signs of stickiness.

The S&P 500, Nasdaq 100, and Dow Jones Industrial Average all saw declines, with the yield on 10-year Treasuries ticking up slightly. The dollar remained volatile amidst the market turmoil.

Despite the uncertainties surrounding tariffs and inflation, some analysts see technical signals suggesting a possible intermediate-term low in the market. Pessimism among individual investors eased slightly, but bearish sentiment remains elevated.

US equities are expected to outperform European stocks in the coming months, with sectors like defense and banks showing limited growth potential across the pond. While the European outlook remains narrow, the US market is poised for a potential recovery in the weeks ahead.

In summary, the market continues to grapple with trade tensions and inflation concerns, with investors closely monitoring upcoming data releases and policy announcements for further guidance.
