Donald Trump can be seen as someone who relies on a single strategy. Following Disney’s decision to settle his unfounded defamation suit against ABC News, and CBS’s settlement of his lawsuit against 60 Minutes, Trump seemed to believe he had discovered a lucrative opportunity to intimidate and influence the media industry.
Buoyed by his initial successes, Trump likely felt invincible in his approach. With two successful lawsuits against broadcasters, he targeted the BBC, alleging they had manipulated footage from January 6, and sought $10 billion in damages.
The BBC, however, differed significantly from CBS and ABC. Trump lacked leverage over the British broadcaster, making it difficult to coerce them as he had others. The BBC had no reason to be intimidated.
In facing Trump’s legal action, the BBC chose a different strategy than what ABC and CBS’s legal teams had recommended. Instead of settling, the BBC proceeded to the discovery phase, during which they issued a subpoena concerning Trump’s revocable trust, managed by Donald Trump Jr., which includes details on the family’s financial interests and connections.
This is a direction that Trump and his family are keen to avoid, leading to a change in the lawsuit’s dynamics.
