“Sneakermania” continues to gain momentum, showcasing the vibrant world of sneaker culture.
Scheduled to premiere in February 2026, this exciting eight-episode Finnish series emerges from the creative minds at Helsinki-filmi. The narrative follows teenage sneaker enthusiast Ola, who dreams of carving out his space as a prominent fashion influencer.
Alongside his friend Bee, Ola – obsessed with the Air Jordan 1 Low OG Chicago – strives to cultivate a substantial following for their TikTok content. However, the dynamic changes when his former best friend Jay enters the scene, threatening to eclipse Ola’s burgeoning fame.
“The storyline transforms from playful, light-hearted exchanges to deeper themes of envy and betrayal,” notes director Ima Iduozee. “While the tone often leans comedic, the characters grapple with real-life challenges, exploring their morals, motivations, and the lengths they are willing to go to for success.”
One of the central themes of the series is the quest for belonging. “The desire to be seen, heard, and accepted is universal,” he explains. “Social media plays a pivotal role in ‘Sneakermania,’ granting characters the autonomy to shape their self-images and control perceptions. For Ola, it’s a pathway to earning respect and recognition.”
Despite the growing array of stories being told from Finland, Iduozee emphasizes that many narratives remain untold. “We have more to showcase beyond the typical Nordic noir and detective stories. I envisioned a version of Helsinki that resonated with my experiences – a portrayal of a new generation of fearless young creatives pursuing their ambitions.”
Exploring sneaker culture, a global trend that connects young adults, emerged as an ideal narrative avenue.
The series has released its trailer:
“For a vast community of young adults, sneakers symbolize more than mere footwear; they embody a cultural lexicon representing identity, creativity, and belonging,” states Mia Ylönen, head of drama at Helsinki-filmi.
The company has also introduced an eagerly awaited thriller, “Icebreaker,” recognized with MipDrama’s Coup de Coeur at the Finnish industry showcase Finnish Film Affair. The series depicts a harrowing tale aboard a stranded vessel, where crew members mysteriously vanish.
According to Ylönen, “Sneakermania” resonates with themes of fashion, music, and social media through captivating lead characters who epitomize the spirit of Helsinki in 2025. “It’s a narrative rich with ambition, self-expression, and undoubtedly, the essence of friendship.”
Pioneered by first-time head writer Vilja Keskimäki, the series also features music from acclaimed Finnish artists like Turisti, Averagekidluke, and Bizi.
“We engaged fashion stylists, designers, dancers, and influencers from the outset of production. Collaborating with those who genuinely embody the sneaker culture was a priority,” Iduozee explains.
Although Ola is portrayed as the “beating heart and driving force,” he is accompanied by a diverse cast of young adults. “They collectively share his zeal for sneakers, a DIY ethos, and the creative expression that speaks to their shared journey of self-discovery within the landscape of friendship and ambition,” Iduozee adds.
Ylönen concludes, “I truly believe Ima is among the next wave of remarkable talents to emerge from Finland: a young, uniquely creative director whose energetic vision will undoubtedly refresh Finnish screens.”
“We sought the right project, and when ‘Sneakermania’ came our way, it felt like the perfect synergy.”
