Republican hotelier Curtis Bashaw’s bid for the Senate in New Jersey has been a rollercoaster ride of support for former President Donald Trump. Despite initially distancing himself from Trump and endorsing a MAGA loyalist in the primary, Bashaw has now found himself trying to navigate a delicate balance between appealing to the Republican base and moderate voters.

Bashaw, who has bipartisan credentials and a successful business background, is facing an uphill battle in a state where Trump is considered politically toxic. The backlash against Trump’s policies and rhetoric has turned many traditionally red New Jersey suburbs blue, making it challenging for Bashaw to align himself with the former president without alienating key voter groups.

His opponent, Democratic Rep. Andy Kim, is the clear frontrunner in the race to fill the Senate seat left vacant by the conviction of Bob Menendez. Despite Bashaw’s efforts to distance himself from Trump and appeal to moderate voters, he faces a tough fight against Kim, who has criticized his rival’s support for the former president.

Bashaw’s campaign focuses on issues like undocumented immigration and repealing the State and Local Tax Deduction cap, which was instituted by Trump. He has also criticized Kim for his stance on Gaza, membership in the Congressional Progressive Caucus, and alignment with Democrats.

While Bashaw insists he will be a “common sense voice” in Washington and govern as a moderate, Kim believes his support for Trump undermines that claim. Kim points to other Republican candidates who have distanced themselves from Trump, suggesting that Bashaw’s alignment with the former president could hinder bipartisan efforts on key issues like abortion rights.

Despite the challenges he faces, Bashaw remains optimistic about his chances in the race and hopes for national Republican support as the election draws closer. However, Kim argues that Bashaw’s support for Trump could ultimately hinder his ability to govern as a moderate and work across party lines.

The race between Bashaw and Kim is shaping up to be a closely watched battle that could have implications beyond New Jersey. As Bashaw continues to navigate the complexities of appealing to both the Republican base and moderate voters, the outcome of the Senate race remains uncertain.
