Carolyn Omine, a longtime writer for “The Simpsons,” faced personal challenges in recent years with the loss of her father and sister, along with the uncertainty of the Hollywood strikes. During these difficult times, she found solace in watching videos of English mentalist and illusionist Derren Brown. Brown’s videos, which explore human behavior through pranks, struck a chord with Omine, reflecting the beauty of humanity.

When the strikes ended, “The Simpsons” had to quickly produce its first original episode for Disney+, a Christmas special titled “O C’mon All Ye Faithful.” Inspired by Brown, Omine pitched the idea for an uplifting and soul-nourishing episode amidst the chaos.

In this episode, Brown visits Springfield to restore the town’s Christmas cheer, focusing on Homer Simpson, a terrible gift giver. Through hypnosis, Homer believes he is Santa Claus, bringing joy to the town. The story delves deeper when Ned Flanders experiences a crisis of faith, and it is a mix of Brown, Prof. Frink, and a touch of magic that helps him find his faith again.

Omine discussed the episode with Variety, highlighting the inclusion of guest stars like Brown, Pentatonix, and Patti LaBelle. She explained the choice of Prof. Frink as the character who reignites Ned’s faith, drawing inspiration from real-life experiences and a sense of wonder in the world.

Derren Brown’s involvement in the episode added a touch of magic, with Omine praising his performance and showmanship. The episode also showcases a more mature and introspective Homer, exploring themes of faith, belief, and the desire to be a good person.

Pentatonix and Patti LaBelle’s music added emotional depth to the episode, with their performances moving the production team to tears. Despite the tight deadline for the episode’s completion, the team worked efficiently to deliver a heartwarming Christmas special for Disney+.

Overall, “O C’mon All Ye Faithful” stands out as a poignant and uplifting episode of “The Simpsons,” blending humor, emotion, and the magic of the holiday season. It is a testament to the resilience and creativity of the show’s writers and producers, even in the face of personal and professional challenges.
