Representative Gerry Connolly has shared a poignant update with his constituents, revealing significant personal challenges.

In his letter, Rep. Connolly expressed his gratitude:

I want to begin by thanking you for your good wishes and compassion as I continue to tackle my diagnosis. Your outpouring of love and support has given me strength in my fights – both against cancer and in our collective defense of democracy.

Since my diagnosis six months ago, I have pledged to remain transparent with you. After a series of challenging treatments, we have discovered that the cancer, which initially seemed to be in retreat, has returned. I am committed to doing everything in my power to continue serving you, and I appreciate your understanding during this time.

As I reflect on my career, I recognize that my time in public service is drawing to a close, and this will be my final term in Congress. I will soon step down as Ranking Member of the Oversight Committee. With a heart full of gratitude and devoid of bitterness, I embrace this last chapter, taking pride in what we have achieved together over three decades. My family and staff provide me with unwavering support, and serving you has been a true privilege.

Interestingly, House Democrats selected Rep. Connolly to lead the influential Oversight Committee, a choice that raised eyebrows at the time, particularly among supporters of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). Yet, Connolly has proven to be a formidable presence on the committee, vigorously challenging Republican policies and fulfilling his role with distinction.

The Democratic caucus will soon convene to elect a new ranking member for this vital committee, while we all hold our breaths, hoping for positive news regarding Rep. Connolly’s health.
