Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence suffered a scary moment during Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans when he was carted off the field in the second quarter after a brutal hit by linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair. The hit, which occurred as Lawrence was sliding, resulted in a concussion for the young quarterback.
Following the hit, Jaguars tight end Evan Engram rushed to confront Al-Shaair, pushing him as Lawrence lay on the ground. This sparked a heated altercation between players from both teams, leading to the ejection of Al-Shaair and Jaguars cornerback Jarrian Jones for unnecessary roughness. Engram also received a 15-yard penalty for his actions.
Texans coach DeMeco Ryans expressed disappointment in the hit, stating that it was not representative of their team. Referee Land Clark explained that Al-Shaair was ejected for the illegal hit on Lawrence, while Jones was ejected for leaving the bench and throwing a punch. Engram, however, was not ejected but penalized for unnecessary roughness.
Engram defended his actions, stating that he felt compelled to stand up for his teammate after witnessing the dangerous hit on Lawrence. He described the hit as dirty and emphasized the importance of supporting fellow players in such situations.
Despite the incident, Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud defended Al-Shaair, claiming that the hit was not intentional. Stroud acknowledged the need for more caution but expressed support for his teammate.
Lawrence, who was making his return to the field after a shoulder injury, had a limited performance before the injury, completing only 4 of 10 passes for 41 yards with an interception. Backup quarterback Mac Jones took over and put up a solid performance, completing 20 of 32 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns.
After the game, Lawrence took to Twitter to thank fans for their support, assuring them that he was feeling better. The Texans ultimately emerged victorious with a 23-20 win over the Jaguars.
The incident involving Al-Shaair is not the first time he has faced disciplinary action from the NFL. Earlier in the season, he was fined for unnecessary roughness in separate incidents against the Chicago Bears and the Tennessee Titans.
Lawrence, the No. 1 pick in the 2021 draft, is in his fourth season with the Jaguars and has been a key player for the team. Despite the setback, Lawrence has shown resilience and determination throughout his career, and fans can expect to see him back on the field soon.
