In the political arena of Texas, Senate Republicans are making a significant push to bolster incumbent Senator John Cornyn’s bid for reelection. This support is particularly notable in light of the challenging primary competition he faces from state Attorney General Ken Paxton and Congressman Wesley Hunt, with backing from influential entities like Senator John Thune’s super PAC.

Recent polling data indicates that Cornyn holds a favorable position against both contenders in the Democratic primary, where state Senator James Talarico and Representative Jasmine Crockett are vying for their party’s nomination.

Amidst a surprisingly competitive Democratic landscape in what is traditionally a red state, Cornyn appears to be the Republicans’ best shot at retaining this Senate seat during what many anticipate to be a challenging midterm election year.

However, a recent event in Corpus Christi revealed a significant misstep for Cornyn. Although he flew to Texas with former President Donald Trump aboard Air Force One, the anticipated endorsement from Trump never materialized, leaving Cornyn with unmet expectations at an event attended by all three Republican Senate candidates.

Republican officials have voiced concerns that if Cornyn falters in his primary, it could necessitate an additional $200 million in spending during the midterms to secure the Senate seat for the GOP. The stakes are high, as the party had hoped Trump would endorse a candidate capable of fortifying their position in November. Instead, the former president’s actions inadvertently handed a significant advantage to Democratic challengers.

There is growing apprehension among Republicans regarding Trump’s potential to jeopardize the Texas Senate race, and recent developments suggest that their fears may be well founded.
