It’s clear that Trump has a personal vendetta against anything Biden has done, especially since Biden defeated him in the 2020 election. Trump has previously used plastic straws as a rallying cry for his base, branding paper straws as a liberal agenda to own the libs. His decision to focus on plastic straws instead of addressing real issues facing the country is a clear example of his lack of depth in policy-making.
While Biden’s plan only targeted government departments and was set to take effect in ten years, Trump has portrayed it as a catastrophic event that needed to be stopped immediately. This reactionary behavior is not surprising coming from a president who pulled out of the Paris climate change agreement and has continuously pushed for increased drilling.
Trump’s obsession with paper straws as a symbol of government overreach is misguided and shows a lack of understanding of the real issues at hand. His focus on non-issues like plastic straws only serves to distract from the important work that needs to be done to address climate change and environmental issues.
