In a gripping town hall discussion aired by NewsNation and moderated by the contentious Chris Cuomo at the historic John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., *border czar* Tom Homan offered a fierce rebuttal to ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith’s critiques of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents for donning masks during their operations.
Smith insisted that ICE officers should not obscure their identities, arguing that “law enforcement officials throughout this country don’t get the license to do that.” However, Homan seized the opportunity to unveil a stark reality faced by ICE personnel daily.
Homan illustrated the alarming circumstances under which ICE officers operate: daily harassment, targeted violence, and even death threats simply for executing immigration policies. He highlighted the hypocrisy of officials from Democrat-led cities who once penalized individuals for not wearing masks amid the COVID-19 pandemic yet now scorn federal agents for protecting their identities.
Stephen Smith:
Law enforcement officials throughout this country don’t get the license to do that. They have to walk up to you. They have to identify who they are. They have to make sure it’s clear. The notion that an ICE agent can conceal their identity is not a privilege shared by other law enforcement officials. Why should they have that right?
Tom Homan:
I won’t say I enjoy wearing a mask, either. But can you name another law enforcement agency that has faced over a 1000% increase in attacks against it?Can you identify another agency whose officers’ families have suffered doxxing, attacks, and bullying at churches and schools?
Each day, these brave men and women don their Kevlar vests and holster their firearms, confronting some of the worst individuals to make our nation safer. If wearing a mask ensures their safety and that of their families, it’s a necessary measure.
I recall a time when not wearing a mask during COVID could lead to police involvement. These officers are simply attempting to safeguard themselves and their loved ones.
I’m not particularly fond of masks. I wish they were unnecessary. But no other law enforcement group faces the level of hostility that ICE does right now.
Immigration enforcement has always been a touchy subject—emotional and polarizing. People must understand that ICE officers don’t lose their humanity when they clock in.
These individuals are parents and guardians with feelings tied to their work. I’ve been part of this field for over forty years. It takes an emotional toll daily.

Homan staunchly defended the operations of ICE, asserting that nearly 70% of their arrests concern public safety or national security threats rather than merely apprehending undocumented migrants.
He pointed out the alarming trend of increased threats against officers, including bounties reaching as high as $50,000 placed by criminal factions targeting ICE agents.
Homan did not hold back in his criticisms of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and other Democratic leaders who disparage immigration enforcement:
“Their disdain for Trump outweighs their concern for the residents of Illinois or Chicago,” Homan expressed candidly.
