Man Who Attacked Flight Attendant with Log on Magnificent Mile Sentenced to Five Years in Prison

CHICAGO — Bruce Diamond, the man responsible for brutally injuring a flight attendant by striking her with a log on a Magnificent Mile sidewalk, has been handed a five-year prison sentence following a guilty plea to aggravated battery causing great bodily harm. The sentence was issued by Judge Anjana Hansen, with Diamond likely to be eligible for parole in 13 months after receiving credits.

The victim, a 23-year-old flight attendant enjoying a layover with a colleague, remained unresponsive for several days after the November 13, 2023, attack outside Burberry at 633 North Michigan Avenue. She sustained severe head and brain injuries, with no updates on her recovery provided by officials.

City surveillance footage obtained through a public records request by CWBChicago captured the attack, showing Diamond carrying a stolen log from a nearby Starbucks and hurling it at the woman, rendering her unconscious and causing her to fall to the ground.

Prosecutors revealed that the victim suffered bruising, swelling, bleeding in the brain, a hemorrhage, and a fracture to her left mastoid as a result of the attack. As bystanders rushed to her aid, Diamond menacingly raised the log again before a police officer intervened and placed him under arrest.

Diamond, with a history of 21 criminal convictions in Ohio since 2011, including an incident where he threw a rock at a Cincinnati Fire Department ambulance, saw a pending misdemeanor battery case dropped less than a week after the assault in Chicago.

With his five-year sentence set to be reduced for good behavior and credits earned during his time in jail, Diamond is facing a remaining 400 days behind bars. Despite the severity of the attack and its impact on the victim, Diamond’s relatively short sentence has sparked debate and raised questions about the adequacy of the justice system in handling such violent crimes.
