The Queens Museum has announced the appointment of Debra Wimpfheimer as its new Executive Director, succeeding Sally Tallant. Wimpfheimer, a Queens native, has been with the institution for over two decades, currently serving as the Deputy Director.
With Tallant’s departure to lead the Southbank Centre’s Hayward Gallery in London, Wimpfheimer will take on the leadership role at the Queens Museum starting this summer. She is credited with leading extensive fundraising efforts for the museum’s expansion and will oversee various ongoing projects, including the development of a new children’s museum, an outdoor playspace inspired by Isamu Noguchi, and additional collection galleries.
Wimpfheimer expressed her excitement about the museum’s expansion and the opportunity to showcase the institution’s collections in newly designed galleries. Plans for exhibitions are in place through 2029, and the museum is in the process of appointing a chief curator to develop new programming in line with the renovated space.
The upcoming outdoor playspace will serve as a cultural destination connecting the museum and park, paying homage to Noguchi’s legacy in Queens. Wimpfheimer has previously served as interim director on two occasions, demonstrating her leadership capabilities and familiarity with the institution’s operations.
Throughout her career, Wimpfheimer has held administrative roles at prominent cultural institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. As Deputy Director of the Queens Museum, she has been responsible for overseeing fundraising efforts, managing the board of trustees, and strategic planning.
In a statement, Wimpfheimer emphasized her commitment to maintaining the Queens Museum as a vibrant and inclusive space for artists and visitors. With Queens being one of the most diverse areas globally, she aims to ensure that the museum remains engaging and accessible to all.
The appointment of Debra Wimpfheimer as Executive Director marks a new chapter for the Queens Museum, bringing a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the institution’s mission and vision. Her leadership is set to steer the museum towards continued growth and success in the years to come.
