The renewed interest in Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) since Trump’s return to office speaks volumes about the political landscape. Sanders has consistently tapped into the undercurrents of American sentiment, illustrating a keen awareness of both Trump’s ambitions and the prevailing issues within the country. For decades, he has sounded the alarm on the dangers of oligarchy, economic disparity, and the erosion of democratic values.

During a recent appearance on CNN’s State Of The Union, Sanders addressed Trump’s controversial deployment of the National Guard to California. He remarked:
We have a president who is rapidly steering this nation towards authoritarianism. He is suing media outlets that criticize him, targeting law firms representing those opposed to him, and attacking educational institutions with curricula he disapproves of. He is even threatening to impeach judges who rule unfavorably towards him, while usurping the legislative powers traditionally held by Congress.
This individual seeks to concentrate power in his own hands. He exhibits a blatant disregard for the Constitution and the rule of law. It is worth noting that neither the governor of California nor the mayor of Los Angeles requested the National Guard’s presence—yet he believes he can act unilaterally. Ultimately, the future of our nation hinges on a select group of Republicans in Congress who understand the Constitution and must find their voice.
In light of the recent commemoration of D-Day, which marked the Allied invasion of Europe to vanquish fascism and Nazism, we are reminded that those brave individuals sacrificed their lives to safeguard democracy—far removed from the notion of a singular, omnipotent ruler in the United States.
Senator Sanders’ insights resonate profoundly. The individuals capable of halting this troubling trajectory are indeed a handful of Republicans in the House and Senate, whose silence has been conspicuous.
What these Republicans fail to grasp is that if Trump can unlawfully deploy the National Guard to California, he can just as easily do so in their own states and districts.
The fear of Trump among congressional Republicans appears to eclipse their commitment to preserving democratic principles. While a small number of voters in key swing states may have mistakenly re-elected Trump, it is the Republican members of Congress who are inadvertently bolstering his authority by their inaction.
