Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra recently ranked the top T20I finishers in a blind ranking exercise. Surprisingly, he did not place star Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya at the top spot. Chopra shared his rankings in a video uploaded on X by ESPNcricinfo on January 25.
The rankings saw South Africa’s Donovan Ferreira at fifth place, followed by West Indies’ Romario Shepherd in the last position. Australian batsman Tim David grabbed the top spot in Chopra’s ranking. England’s Harry Brook secured the fourth spot, with New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell placed third. The final player revealed was Hardik Pandya, who earned the second position in Chopra’s list.
Tim David, who currently holds the 11th position in the Men’s T20I batting rankings, has played 68 T20Is, scoring 1,596 runs at an average of 36.27 and a striking rate of 168.88. He has nine fifties and one century to his name.
In a recent appearance on JioHotstar’s ‘Game Plan’ show before the ongoing T20I series against New Zealand, Chopra emphasized the importance of Hardik Pandya in the Indian team. He stated that India is incomplete without Pandya and that there is no player like him in the world.
Chopra highlighted Pandya’s versatility with both bat and ball, mentioning his ability to contribute in various aspects of the game. He acknowledged Pandya’s unique skill set, stating that only he can provide the balance needed in the team with his all-round abilities.
Currently, Hardik Pandya is part of the Indian team in the T20I series against New Zealand, where the hosts have already secured a 3-0 lead with two matches remaining.
The rankings and Chopra’s comments shed light on the dynamic nature of T20 cricket and the value of players like Hardik Pandya who can make a significant impact on the game with their all-round skills.
Overall, Chopra’s insights and rankings provide an interesting perspective on the evolving role of finishers in T20 cricket and the unique contributions of players like Hardik Pandya in shaping the outcomes of matches.
