First Lady Melania Trump expressed her pride in sharing Whistler’s masterpiece, Nocturne, with art enthusiasts worldwide. She emphasized the significance of the international art community experiencing America’s exceptional talent in fine art, highlighting Whistler as one of the nation’s finest artists.

James McNeill Whistler’s Nocturne is set to be removed from the Treaty Room to be part of an extensive exhibition dedicated to the celebrated American painter at Tate Britain and the Van Gogh Museum. This marks the first full-career exhibition in Europe for Whistler (1834-1903) in three decades.

The loan of this artwork to Tate Britain and the Van Gogh Museum represents a rare international sharing from the White House Collection, which is usually only accessible to select U.S. institutions like the Smithsonian and the National Gallery of Art.

On Monday evening, First Lady and President Trump hosted a dinner at the White House for King Willem-Alexander, Queen Maxima, and Prime Minister Rob Jetten of the Netherlands.

The Whistler retrospective is scheduled to open in London, Amsterdam, and Washington in May 2026. The painting will be returned to the White House Collection by summer 2027.
