Since Donald Trump’s return to the White House, Fox News has decidedly shifted its allegiance towards autocracy. The network, once quick to label Democratic leaders like Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden as anti-freedom authoritarians, now seems to have forgotten those accusations entirely.

With Trump back in the political arena, Fox News appears to revel in the idea of rights violations and arbitrary arrests—quite in line with the ethos of their most significant viewer.

In a recent exchange, Fox News host Will Cain expressed disbelief while questioning Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton: “It’s costly to delay and evade. Last time it was a 38-day ordeal, racking up $500 daily fines. That’s quite a bill, not to mention the private jets involved. The governor hinted at potential bribery. What’s your take on who’s bankrolling this Democrat getaway?”

Paxton’s response was predictably vague: “There are ways to find out. They will soon need to report on special session funding, and in a month or so, we’ll learn who’s behind this. Ultimately, it’s up to local district attorneys—most of whom lean Democratic—to prosecute. I wouldn’t hold my breath on that. If I had the authority, which I don’t in Texas, we could tackle this more effectively. But we’re at the mercy of Democratic DAs.”

Texas Republicans, including Governor Greg Abbott, find themselves powerless to charge Democrats who absconded from the state to avoid participating in a special session aimed at passing a gerrymandered electoral map.

With no criminal charges feasible, the Republicans are left to impose fines on the absent Democrats. They must pass the gerrymandered map by year-end, or risk missing the window for implementation ahead of the 2026 elections.

Every day that the Texas House Democrats maintain their absence constitutes a small victory for democracy.

Interestingly, Fox News seems to reserve its concerns about freedom exclusively for periods when a Democratic president is at the helm. Their dismay at the inability to bring Democrats to heel underlines a stark irony: the network’s recent embrace of Trumpian anti-democratic tendencies.

What are your thoughts on Fox News’ reaction to the inability to apprehend Texas House Democrats? Share your insights in the comments below.
