Here We Go Again: Bird Flu Virus Detected in California ‘Raw Milk’ Product, Prompting Urgent Recall |

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has issued a warning after discovering the presence of the bird flu virus in a sample of raw milk from Raw Farm, LLC in Fresno County. This concerning finding has prompted the company to initiate a voluntary recall of the affected product, identified by the lot code 20241109 and a Best By date of 11/27/2024.

Although no illnesses have been reported in connection with this contaminated batch, the CDPH is taking swift action to protect consumers. Individuals who have purchased the raw milk in question are urged to return it to the point of purchase immediately. Retailers have also been instructed to remove the affected product from their shelves to prevent any further distribution.

The County of Santa Clara Public Health Laboratory, in collaboration with the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System, confirmed the presence of the bird flu virus in a sample of raw milk obtained from a local retailer. This discovery underscores the importance of thorough testing and monitoring to safeguard public health.

In a press release issued by the CDPH, public health experts emphasize the dangers associated with consuming raw milk products. Raw milk has been linked to outbreaks of various foodborne illnesses, including Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, E. coli, Brucella, and Campylobacter. Unlike pasteurized milk, which undergoes a heating process to eliminate harmful pathogens like the bird flu virus, raw milk poses a higher risk of contamination.

Symptoms of bird flu infection in humans can range from mild respiratory issues to more severe complications. Individuals who have consumed the tainted raw milk and are experiencing symptoms such as cough, sore throat, diarrhea, muscle aches, or fever are advised to seek medical attention promptly.

To prevent further instances of bird flu contamination, the CDFA has implemented increased testing of raw milk from dairies across California. Following the positive test result from the retail sample, Raw Farm LLC underwent additional testing, which yielded negative results for the virus. Ongoing monitoring and testing will now be conducted twice a week to ensure the safety of raw milk products.

In light of these developments, it is crucial for consumers to choose pasteurized milk and milk products, which have undergone the necessary heating process to eliminate harmful pathogens. Pasteurization is a critical step in food safety that helps protect against foodborne illnesses like bird flu.

This recent incident coincides with the CDC’s confirmation of the first-ever case of avian influenza A(H5N1) in a child in the United States. While the young patient in California has since recovered from mild symptoms and tested negative for the bird flu virus, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of food safety measures and vigilance in preventing the spread of infectious diseases.

As authorities continue to monitor and address the presence of the bird flu virus in raw milk products, consumers are urged to prioritize their health and well-being by opting for pasteurized dairy products. By making informed choices and following recommended safety guidelines, individuals can reduce their risk of exposure to harmful pathogens and ensure a healthier future for themselves and their families.
