The FA Cup third-round game between Arsenal and Manchester United on Sunday sparked a debate about the impact of the ball being used on the outcome of a match. After Arsenal’s manager, Mikel Arteta, attributed his team’s inability to convert chances to the ball’s unique flight and grip, questions were raised about whether the ball was to blame for their profligacy.

The ball in question, the Orbita 1 by Puma, was defended by the English Football League (EFL), which organizes the Carabao Cup, stating that it had been successfully used in other major European leagues without issue. Despite this, Arteta’s comments shed light on the importance of external factors such as the pitch and the ball in influencing the outcome of a football match.

Different balls are used in various competitions, with Arsenal experiencing a change in ball manufacturer between the Premier League, Carabao Cup, FA Cup, and Champions League. Each ball has its own unique characteristics, with slight alterations in design potentially impacting a player’s performance.

The infamous Jabulani ball from the 2010 World Cup in South Africa serves as a stark example of a ball’s effect on players. Criticized for its unpredictable flight and swerve, the Jabulani divided opinions among players, with some struggling to adapt while others excelled with it.

Former players have also highlighted the differences in feel and performance when switching between different ball manufacturers. Just as in football, other sports such as basketball have seen players express preferences for specific balls based on their touch and feel.

As Arsenal prepares for their upcoming matches with the Puma Orbita 1 ball, Arteta may consider increasing their familiarity with it to optimize performance. With Puma set to become the official football supplier to the Premier League next season, early adaptation to the new ball could provide a competitive advantage.

In conclusion, the choice of ball used in a match can have a significant impact on players’ performance and the outcome of the game. Adapting to different balls and understanding their unique characteristics is crucial for teams aiming for success in various competitions.
