A shocking incident captured on surveillance video reveals a mob of masked thieves storming a jewelry store in California, making off with an estimated $1 million in merchandise. This brazen robbery took place in broad daylight on a Monday in San Ramon, approximately 34 miles east of San Francisco, and appears to be linked to a gang behind several similar raids.

The alarming footage shows as many as 30 individuals dressed in black using crowbars and pickaxes to smash through the store’s display cases. When a security door attempted to lock them in, the assailants fired shots, facilitating their escape from the scene.

“Upon entering, they completely overwhelmed the store, grabbing whatever jewelry was accessible,” stated Lt. Mike Pistello from the San Ramon Police Department in an interview with ABC 7 News.

According to Pistello, the suspects had evidently planned the theft meticulously, arriving in six different vehicles and parking them conveniently in the valet area, just 100 feet from the store’s entrance. While authorities estimate that at least 20 individuals were involved, witnesses reported numbers closer to 30.

Authorities believe the robbery was well-organized, allowing the thieves quick access to the jewelry store.

Witnesses estimated the number of thieves as high as 30, indicating a well-coordinated effort.

Thanks to a drone funded by a grant for organized retail theft surveillance, police managed to capture footage of the suspects’ vehicles and their escape. “The drone footage showcases all the vehicles used in the crime, as well as the suspects entering and exiting their cars,” Pistello commented.

Following the theft, law enforcement has arrested seven individuals, including a juvenile, in subsequent raids conducted in Oakland and nearby Dublin. All of the suspects, aged between 17 and 31, hail from Oakland and are believed to have committed similar crimes in the Bay Area.

So far, two firearms have been recovered alongside some of the stolen jewelry that was likely discarded during the suspects’ flight from the scene. Additionally, several vehicles utilized in the heist have been reported stolen.

“This isn’t their first incident of this nature,” added Pistello. “These types of events are rare in San Ramon, but we are diligently pursuing every lead to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.”
